Magazine Project Genre Research- Self

Cover:
Self Magazine is a magazine for women about health, wellness, beauty and style. This issue is similar to other issues of Self Magazine. The common cover theme is white or black, bold and all caps 'Self' letters as the title, a blue sky background, and a woman posing or in an athletic pose covering part of the 'e' and 'l' in 'Self'. The subtexts surrounding the woman's body match the central colors of the woman and typically her outfit. In this issue, she is wearing white and gold, so the words surrounding her are in white and gold. They added a pop of bright pink lettering in the subtext to help make the magazine catch the eyes of readers and buyers. Also in this issue, Misty Copeland's slimming outfits and muscular/toned body helps emphasize the benefits of reading this issue to achieve this type of body. The subtexts around the woman are typically the top articles of the issue and inspirational quotes to help encourage the reader to stay fit and healthy. Some examples are "Arms, Abs, Everything: The 10-Minute workout." and "Live The Dream!".
Content:
In this magazine, they have articles related to fitness, food, wellness and clothing. Some examples include, "12 No-Equipment Exercises Top Trainers Swear By" and "The Best Eye Creams, according to Dermatologists". The main articles are spread out, usually 5-7 pages apart, while some 10-15. Ads are common between each article, usually relating to beauty products, food, or clothing. The ads fill most of the pages, before and after the table of contents, along with the articles. On the cover page there is a toned, attractive woman wearing a slimming outfit to compliment her fitness lifestyle. On the table of contents they have bright colors and pictures of the articles in that specific issue filling the page. Finally, on the articles they have visuals of the content being discussed, usually 1 or 2 pictures.

They have been around since 1979 and have grown so much since then, becoming extremely well known in the world.

Magazine Project Genre Research- Health

Cover:
Health Magazine is a magazine that discusses women's health and dieting/weight loss techniques. The magazine's cover pages vary more than the past magazines I have researched. Instead of being a solid white background, similar fonts and colors, and a woman on the front in a slimming outfit, this magazine has different woman dressed in different fitted clothes, with different background and font colors. This issue is a white background with a central color of yellows and greens, with a woman smiling on the center of the page in a flowy yellow shirt. Other common issues have a woman smiling on the front center with a beach background, same fonts, but colors vary based on the woman's clothing or how much they want the magazine to stand out. The 'Health' is always the same bold font and the words around the woman are in different fonts and sizes, usually black and a color that matches the woman. The words surrounding her are the main articles in the issue like "Amazing Anti-Aging techniques" and the articles the magazine believes will sell the best and catch the readers eye the most are in the larger size font. Some of the other subtitles are the woman's name and page numbers for the articles. The bold greens and yellow help the magazine stand out to the reader more, helping sell and advertise better. Most of the words on the cover are either in bold or all capital letters. Like most other health and fitness magazines, the woman's head on the front is covering the middle letter of the title, in this case the 'a' in 'Health'.
Content:
In the magazine, they have articles like "Screen Time and Social Health", "How I teach Body Positive Dance Classes", and "6 Mistakes you could be making on the Keto Diet". These articles are spread out amongst the whole magazine, more towards the end of the magazine, and all the articles have 5-10 pages of ads between them. After a couple of ads, the table of contents page is listed which highlights the main articles that the readers must read, some that were listed on the cover. All of the articles are related to health, recent news, food, fitness and beauty. The ads are typically related to food or beauty, for those are the ones the magazine believes will sell the most. On the cover page there is a healthy and happy woman smiling to represent a well maintained lifestyle. The table of contents includes pictures of woman, healthy foods and recent news articles images. The articles have pictures relating to the main idea of the article to help provide visuals to the reader.
Distribution:
The distribution number for Health Magazine is about 1,370,770, meaning my group will have a total circulation of around 650,000. There is no known awards for Health Magazine, but they have been around since 1981 and has published its annual beauty awards which highlights the top products in skincare today. In 2008, Health Magazine underwent a makeover by Michael Grossman which increased their overall circulation number.

Magazine Project Genre Research- Men's Health

Cover:
Men's Health Magazine is a the male version of Women's Health. The magazine covers fitness, health, nutrition, grooming, tech, weight loss and more. The magazine's cover pages vary a little more than the past magazines researched; but the majority of the issues are of a toned, healthy and appealing male on the front. The male is either centered or on the right third of the page. The white background with either a bold red or orange title is common. This helps in bringing out the title and male on the front, showing off the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, which then helps sell the magazine. The colors used are white, black, red and yellow, with different text style/fonts for each subtext surrounding the man. All of the subtexts are in bold to help catch the eye of the reader, as well as exclamations used on some of the sayings. The words surrounding the man are similar to other health/fitness lifestyle magazines, with clever sayings, quotes or titles of articles used and soon to be discussed in that particular issue. The man's head is covering a part of the title which is a common theme throughout all of the magazines issues, help making them unique and bold. There is a small subtext of words above the title saying something inspirational; as well as another small subtext below the title saying the date issued, helping inform the reader of how recent the magazine is.
Contents:
The kinds of articles used are nutrition and healthy eating, physical fitness and men's fashion. They discuss some workout plans and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Like every other health and fitness magazine, the ads are filling the pages, frequently used on most pages, and alternating before and after the main articles. The ads are products that are most recommended by health and fitness professionals, like nutritional foods and self care products that benefit the body and lifestyle the reader wants to achieve the most. Like the Women's Health Magazine, the pictures used in articles and table of contents are related to the overarching idea of each article written. For example if it is a food health article, they will show a visual idea of the food they are discussing. Or if it is about a workout technique/strength building it would be a picture of a male working out or lifting weights.
Distribution:
The distribution number for Men's Health Magazine is around 1.8 million, so my group and I are projected to sell around 900,000. Men's Health has won several of awards for its journalism, uniqueness and high esteem. Some of the awards being the General Excellence Award, several Ad Age Media Vanguard Awards, National Magazine Awards, journalism awards and Reader's Choice by Ad Week.

Like the other health magazines, surrounding the woman on the front are words in all different colors, sizes and fonts. The subtexts are slogans, titles of articles in this issue, or quotes that draw the reader in, thus catching their attention to want to be like her by reading this magazine. Just like previously researched 'Shape Magazine', there is a small subtext of words right about the first word, in this case 'women's', that is an inspirational or relevant piece of text that ads to the overall layout and attractiveness.

Project Selection- My Decision

I decided to do the magazine project because when I looked at my skills and challenges for each project, I seemed to have more strengths in the magazine than I did in film production. I have more experience in print journalism and writing articles, which are both crucial in the body of a magazine. As well as my experience in photography, which is accommodating in the design and selling portion of magazines. Due to my characteristics of being neat and detail oriented, I believe I will succeed more in print journalism, because of my challenges in directing and decision-making in the film project. I have decided to do the magazine project with 3 other people as a group. We collectively concluded on an active/health lifestyle type genre of magazine, focusing in on the city of Sarasota. Our target audience is teens and young adults who are currently pursuing to have a better, healthier and more fit lifestyle. One member of the group is going to go to a local skate park and interview the teens there, seeing how they stay fit and active with skate boarding. Another member of the group is going to go to a nearby athletic center and talk to young adults on why and how they decided to stay active, and if they have any tips. I have experience in dieting and the food aspect of staying healthy, so I will be interviewing healthy food places and giving tips on daily food lifestyles, showing the benefits of them. Lastly, the final group member will be talking to someone who isn't common to work-out or live an active life, and will ask how they maintain a steady fitness related diet.

Project Selection- Film

I think the film project selection would be a good choice for me because film production is very interesting to me, and I have always been a huge fan of the different genres of film. I watch films frequently; typically horror, comedies, or romantic comedies are what I lean towards. After watching 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' and the 'Making of Ferris Bueller' , I was able to see the way a movie is made, and how they portray certain ideas or scenes using camera work, shots, sound, editing, and mise-en-scene. With film production techniques, they made the story of Ferris Bueller come to life. I believe I would be good at the directing because I like to voice my opinion and would be able to take a position of deciding camera or editing techniques based on my experience in film. Even though I have an interest, I think I will have challenges in the production of the film and coming up with the ideas for certain camera shots or angles that would fit the scene and script. So, if I were to choose the film project selection, I believe I will possess certain advantages but be faced with several challenges. Making a film will peak my interest in production and directing, and would be an interesting challenge benefiting me in learning the ways an extract is constructed.

Project Selection- Magazine

I believe the magazine project is a good selection for me because I have always had an interest in magazines and print journalism. In my free-time I like to read through magazines, usually in the category of entertainment, fashion, or lifestyle. I am very neat, detail oriented, and love to write. I have experience in both photography and writing articles; and I always seem to have access to the most 'up to date' entertainment or fashion styles. In the last couple years, I have taken classes in photography and digital info technology, giving me experience in both areas. Also, I am currently taking a journalism class where I am writing articles of the SHS school newspaper, which is assisting me in writing excerpts, interviewing, and publishing a magazine style spread. Getting interviews may be one challenge for me, but I believe I have the right availability to find the best people. When watching and viewing magazines in this AICE Media Studies class, I learned a lot about the production of newspapers using print journalism and news channels through the film All the President's Men, and HBO tv series The Newsroom. Also, in an in-class project I got the chance to look at a magazine and analyze it. This helped show me the techniques and styles that are used to make a magazine, and why they make those decisions. Based on all my experience and things I have learned in this class, I believe a lifestyle type magazine would be the best project decision for me.
